Woodland Lane Ceramics art studio creates a creative community in Magnolia in its first year

Husband and wife Kinsey and Jesse Lane always had the idea of starting a pottery studio. But the couple said they put their dream on hold until they found land in Magnolia to build their studio from the ground up.

“We decided to buy the land and try to build our own [pottery]“, said Kinsey.

After spending nearly two years building the studio, Woodland Lane Ceramics opened in July 2021.

“We are lucky and ended up having two students our first week [in] our first class,” Kinsey said. “They are still there. We love them.”

Although the 5 and 12 week pottery courses are nearly full, Woodland Lane Ceramics continues to introduce people to the art form through its one-off workshops, such as a marble pot throwing session.

“It just took off pretty immediately,” Jesse said. “It’s really surprising how many people have found out about this and have come to do this.”

Kinsey said the pottery studio had about 60 students in total.

Kinsey also strives to bring other ceramists into the studio for workshops, she said. Last September, Woodland Lane brought in a representative from Mayco, a ceramics company, who taught the students different glazing techniques.

“I really want it to be a ceramic arts center,” Kinsey said. “We’re not just something you come and play once. You can come and learn different things; it is very instructive.

Whether they’re hosting workshops or simply guiding students through a new technique, Kinsey and Jesse enjoy introducing people to pottery and watching them grow as artists, the couple said.

“We have a really good community,” Kinsey said. “I think that’s why people keep staying.”
