POCATELLO — A fire that ravaged his business didn’t stop Sixes Creatives co-owner Josh Pohlman from pursuing his vision.
The February fire left Sixes, Polhman’s art studio, a charred husk, with Pohlman and his company facing an uncertain future. But less than four months later, Sixes has a new location on Yellowstone Avenue and a full slate of future projects.
The new location gives Sixes much more space and flexibility.
“It’s just under 4,000 square feet,” Pohlman said. “Our old shop was 560 square meters. We keep thinking about what we were able to accomplish with 500 square feet. Now we have the opportunity to expand and have a professional space for artists. We have garage space to do shows, events and classes.
The increased space will also help further facilitate Polhman’s vision that Sixes is a fun and safe environment for young people. Pohlman said Sixes was looking for a grant that would help the studio provide a clean, unthreatened space that could serve as a haven for children having trouble at home.
The new building also places the Six in a position where they are more visible to the public.
“We’re on Yellowstone now,” Pohlman said. “Now we have daily counts of traffic passing this building that downtown sees every year. We have more eyes on us. We want to be a Pocatello company. We want to be accessible to everyone, not just people doing business downtown.
The new Sixes venue is open to the public and staff are currently busy constructing the interior of the new building to prepare for a very busy list of upcoming events. First of all, Sixes organizes the inauguration of its chamber of commerce on Thursday June 23rd.
On Saturday, June 25, the studio will hold the 2022 edition of Mural Fest. This is an event that offers businesses the opportunity to get art on their buildings at dramatically reduced prices while providing wall space for emerging artists.
Pohlman said they have six or seven confirmed walls around Pocatello that they will paint and that they will bring in a mix of local and overseas talent to complete the artwork. The mural began on Tuesday, June 21, with a wrap-up party at the end of the murals on Saturday, June 25.
The closing party will be doubled by the grand opening celebration of the Six. Pohlman said it was going to be quite a hit.
“We invite everyone to come to the store,” he said. “We have food trucks here, we have bands and DJs playing in the store. We will have tattoo artists doing flash art in one of the creative bays and local artists displaying artwork on tables around the shop for you to browse and purchase. It’s gonna be really cool.
Sixes is planning more events over the coming months as they continue to carry out their mission to bring vitality and color to the walls of Pocatello. They hold monthly “Art Untamed” events every fourth Sunday at the Idaho Zoo and they have another edition of their popular Art Battle event coming up in October.
The new Sixes Creatives location at 225 Yellowstone Avenue in Pocatello is currently open to the public. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram for more information on upcoming Sixes events.
