AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Like a number of different art studios, Create Healing Art Studio here in Amarillo offers classes for everyone, from toddlers to seniors.
“Art encompasses so many different things, not just painting. It can be written. It can be a journal. It can be your little scribbles here and there,” said studio owner Kandace Mell. art of creating healing.
But Create Healing Art also offers something beyond that.
“So we focus on childhood trauma and family trauma. Our goal is to provide an outlet for people, so they can use it to heal through self-expression. We offer individual lessons. We have groups. We have a lot of activity that revolves around that,” Mell said.
After working for several years as an advocate for CASA and the Department of Family Protective Services, Mell started the studio after noticing the need to provide an outlet that wasn’t just therapy or counseling.
“While these are great options, a lot of them are really backed up. I just wanted something that was accessible to people that they could just walk in and out and feel better or they could walk in and we could give them the tools to help themselves when they started to feel that low point in their life,” Mel said.
Mell knows firsthand the impact this can have, having treated it herself.
“I myself had a lot of trauma as a child and always leaned into art. It was forever like a hobby. I was doodling and no one ever saw me do it for ages. So knowing that I can just relieve someone or help them have an easier day, help them concentrate better at work or be happier when they come home instead of stressed It’s just awesome,” Mell said.
Mell said they are also working on a program to get out and work with area veterans and seniors in assisted living.
